About the Vintry and Mercer

I must confess I have a thing for boutique hotels. They are my favourite!

There isn’t much that can beat the uniqueness and level of personalized service that you can get at a small or boutique hotel. Don’t you think?

I don’t think you can consider the Vintry & Mercer, a boutique hotel with its ninety-two rooms. But it sure felt like it! We were quite surprised to find out that this hotel had that many rooms. From the moment we arrived, we felt like we were VIPs.

Location of the Hotel

20 Garlick Hill, London

One of the many great things about this hotel is its location!

Down the narrow cobbled street of Garlick Hill, the Vintry & Mercer is a very short walk to the Mansion House Underground station. (Like really short, according to my CityMapper App, it’s a two-minute walk.)

Garlick Hill Road, London

We loved being so close to the underground station, which allowed us to be anywhere in the city in a few short minutes. Which honestly was so fun and saved us a lot of money as well.

We also did quite a bit of walking directly from the hotel.

On our first full day after we arrived, we happily walked along the Thames to the Tower of London and Tower Bridge. Which if I didn’t stop to be a looky-loo or take a million pictures, it would have taken us about fifteen minutes. Other tourist hot spots such as the Tate Modern museum or Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre are also within a fifteen-minute walk across the Southwark Bridge.

We found this hotel to be a great central location for our first visit to London. It was super easy to walk to so many tourist hot spots and great restaurants.

The access to the tube and tourist spots was terrific. But we also liked how quiet the area was. Most of the people we would see around the hotel were locals. It seemed like it is not typically an area with a lot of tourists.

* Side Note: Oh my gosh, we went to Gordon Ramsay’s Bread Street Kitchen for supper one night. Seriously this was one of the highlights of our trip. It was fantastic. And it is so close to the hotel we walked there in less than ten minutes!

The Hotel

Look at all these plants! I’m in heaven!

The decor of the hotel is gorgeous. Tropical plants are found everywhere on the main floor creating a fresh and vibrant aesthetic. Everything seemed very purposeful. From the beautiful tiles, light fixtures, to the marble dining tables in the restaurant and the plush fabrics in the rooms, I couldn’t get enough.

The decor style is tasteful and harkens back to another time. The hotel location is smack dab in the middle of the historic merchant areas, which the hotel is named after. (Vintry = Wine and Mercer = textiles.)

It’s really very beautiful. In fact, I’d like my house to look like this now!

Not only did they create a visually pleasing experience with their gorgeous decor. But the Vintry & Mercer have somehow made their main floor smell wonderful!

I’m not sure how they do it or even how to describe the scent. Sort of herb-like maybe? A bountiful herb garden? I’m not exactly sure how else to describe it. I loved it, so fresh and homey. We would arrive back after a long and tiring day, and as soon as we walked in the front door, the scent was instantly uplifting.

I’ve only ever really noticed a purposeful scent at one other hotel before. And that was the Animal Kingdom Lodge at Disney World. I believe that the Vintry & Mercer try to go above and beyond, so on top of everything else, staying here is a luxurious and sensory experience.

What the hotel offers

Restaurants and Bars

There are two restaurants on the property: Mercer Roof Terrace and Vintry Izakaya. And one bar, Do Not Disturb.

The Mercer Roof Terrace is a beautiful restaurant on the top floor with amazing views of the city. Unfortunately, it was too cold for us to sit outside when we had supper here, but can’t you imagine sitting out on this patio with a glass of wine admiring the view.

We did have supper at Mercer Roof Terrace one evening. The service was fantastic. However, we were a bit disappointed with our meals. I thought they were okay, but for the price, we expected it to be a much high quality and standard.

We ate breakfast every morning at Vintry Izakaya. I wish I had taken some photos of the fantastic spread that they put out each morning. Along with the buffet, you can also order off of the menu. My husband loved the full English breakfast. The servers were very friendly and quick.

Both of these restaurants are great to sit and have a cocktail, glass of wine or a beer. The Vintry & Mercer also offers another option as there is also the super chic speakeasy bar in the basement called Do Not Disturb. Styled after a roaring twenties speakeasy, DND is a comfortable and beautiful place to sit and relax.

Hotel details and Amenities

Welcome gift from the staff of the Vintry and Mercer Hotel in London.

This hotel offers five different types of rooms: Standard, Superior, Deluxe, Deluxe Suite, and the Studio Suite. Our deluxe room was perfect for my husband and me, but I was thrilled to see that rooms can be connected for a family to stay close together.

I’m sure by this point, you’re probably wondering what does this hotel cost?

London isn’t exactly known for its affordable hotel stays. But I’m happy to tell you that a deluxe room like the one we stayed in will cost an average of $400 per night (CAD). Which honestly, for this luxurious hotel in London, we thought this price was very reasonable.

I should mention as well that the hotel offers several meeting rooms for your events as well as a fitness centre on the property.

Our Room

We stayed in a Deluxe Room

King Size Bed in our Deluxe Room at Vintry & Mercer

Our Deluxe room was beautifully decorated and spacious.

We booked the larger room thinking that coming from Canada; we are used to bigger rooms than what is typical in Europe. Our hotel room was perfect for us but likely would have also been very comfortable in the smaller rooms available.

The king-sized bed was very comfortable. The linens and pillows were clean and soft. The hotel graciously provided several amenities in their rooms. They provided us with a converter for our plug-in items, plush bathrobes, slippers and bathroom items such as nail files, sewing kit, shower cap, etc. They have a lovely set up for coffee & tea, plus they provide a few free snacks such as popcorn and cookies.

The Bathroom

The bathroom was huge!

My favourite things about this bathroom (besides the beautiful tiles!) were the waterfall shower, oversized towels, cushy robes and best of all, the heated floors

The hotel provided several complimentary toiletries in the bathroom. There was typical stuff like a shower cap, nail file and such. But my favourite item was an exfoliating mitt that I ended up slipping into my bag.

Conclusion

As I’m sure you can tell we really loved this hotel.

The Vintry and Mercer was an excellent fit for us. The Deluxe room we stayed in was luxurious and very, very comfortable. The location of the hotel was optimal for exploring London during the first visit to the city.
